Answered Prayer!

We just received word that Jacob's work permit has gone through! This is a huge answer to prayers! After applying for the work permit in October, we stepped out in faith and came to the country under tourist visas earlier this month. This allowed us to stay in the country for ninety days, but we would not be able to work in Tanzania. We thank God for this answer to prayer and everyone who prayed. Now that we have our work visa, the residence permit should come through allowing us to stay in the country for two years before renewal.


In addition to the work permits, we started our first day of language learning and obtained our Tanzania driving license. Getting our licenses was something else! Imagine as best you can being stuffed inside a hot, humid cement building while everyone around you is cramming to fit through one single doorway. Only this time, eight soldiers armed with shortened pump action shotguns and AK-47s are blocking the entrance. For some reason, the lights are out and it is hard to see. Tempers are flaring, people are yelling at each other and the soldiers, and you can hardly hear yourself talk. You start to think maybe this is not a great idea. 

Fortunately for us, we had the twins and people love babies, especially twins. We were shuffled to the front and were quickly back outside with our licenses. Wow. What an experience. Probably not the last time this will happen... 


As a timely celebration, we decided it was a good time to go to the ocean. It is only ten minutes from where we live.

Don't worry. He didn't come up crying. He was actually having a blast since he knows how to swim and loves the water. The ocean is so warm here!




An old rig beached next to Dar Es Salaam. Makes me wonder how long it has been there and how it even got there.

Getting to work has been an adventure of its own. Sometimes I drive, but lately I have been walking or riding my bicycle. It is a great  way to go over all the Swahili greetings (there are many) and get some fresh air (or be thoroughly dusted by a large passing vehicle). Parents Moving to Tanzania in 10 Days!

A few weeks ago we found out that the Christian school which Silas and Jason are attending was in need of a principle. Carmen's parents are both teachers and having cross culture experience we mentioned in passing that they should come... We could never have imagined, but they will be coming to Arusha in 10 days! Have you ever wondered what manna tasted like during the days of Moses? Well, wonder no more. I have solved the mystery! And with a few potatoes and minimal knifing skills you can replicate this ancient delicacy. First you need to chop them up Get rid of the bad spots (for looks so the wife will eat them) Oh, this potato chopper can be useful. All you need to do to get one is marry off your sister so that you can have a brother in law who appreciates fries as much as you do. Rinse and dry them I recommend putting the audience to work drying them But you know, the secret isn't in the potato, its in the oil.
